Ribbon Highlights: The Feminine Touch Your Hair Needs

Hair color is an effective way that we can cultivate a more outwardly femme appearance on an ongoing everyday basis. However, in the world of hair color, there are so many trends for us to keep up with these days that it can be confusing especially if we want to show off a look that is fashionably feminine and not look outdated.

I know that it can feel overwhelming. The good news is that there is one highlighting technique that seems to stay fashionable season after season. I’m talking about ribbon highlights. This gorgeously feminine highlighting technique is one you’ll want to look out for, I’m sure that once you have seen stylish women look with this hairstyle, you’ll maybe even want to try it out for yourself.

The good news for you ladies is that I’ve got the scoop on ribbon highlights, including what they are, how to get them, and the best ways to maintain this pretty hair color trend.

What Are Ribbon Highlights?

Ribbon highlights are similar to the balayage technique in that they add depth and dimension to hair, but the highlights aren’t concentrated on just the ends of the hair. The ribbon highlighting method works like this: begin with a solid color base, then weave a lighter hue throughout the entirety of the hair in ribbon-like pieces.

This creates a gorgeous contrast between light and dark pieces that, especially when styled with a curling iron, resemble ribbons! Instead of the highlight being heavy on the ends of your hair, the lighter-colored ribbons twist throughout the full length of your hair (whether you have short hair or long hair). Picture this, for example, A medium-brunette base color, with thin strips of caramel-colored locks woven throughout like pretty ribbons.

How To Get Ribbon Highlights

I’m afraid that ribbon highlights are not something that you’ll be able to DIY at home. Because this highlighting technique involves coloring full strips of hair, all the way from grown-out roots through to the ends, you will want to book an appointment with a professional colorist to achieve the look.

Something else that you’ll also want to keep in mind is that achieving the ribbon-like look that you want could require some bleaching or lowlights. So, if your hair is already a lighter brunette or blonde shade, you’ll have to add some darker hues to your overall hair in order to achieve a little contrast.

As always, whenever you are making a change to a new hair color, it is a good idea to bring in a picture to give your colorist a better idea of what you’re going for with your new look.

How To Maintain Ribbon Highlights

You maintain ribbon highlights the same way that you do for any other new hair color trend that you try out or use. You need to adjust your hair care routine to best suit and maintain your new hairdo.

For ribbon highlights, or for that matter, any type of highlights, you’ll want to use a color-safe shampoo and conditioner system. I use the L’Oréal Paris EverPure Repair & Defend Shampoo (available on Amazon) and the L’Oréal Paris EverPure Repair & Defend Conditioner (available on Amazon).

You want a hair care system that is color-safe and sulfate-free. You should also aim to use a hair mask two to three times per week which is what I do. Choose a hair mask that coordinates with your shampoo and conditioner, such as the L’Oréal Paris Everpure Repair Remedy Balm (available on Amazon) which is what I use.

How To Style Ribbon Highlights

Once you have taken the plunge and become the proud owner of ribbon highlights, you will want to style them in ways that show off your beautiful new color the best way that you can. Take a look below, I’ve got a couple of styling ideas for you to try.

Hair Style Idea 1: Large, Loose Curls

As I mentioned earlier, one of the prettiest ways to style your ribbon highlights is with a good old-fashioned curling iron or even large hot rollers. As an added bonus, the process of using a classic curling iron or hot rollers will be enough to give you a rush of femme feelings.

The look that you will want to go for is large, loose waves. Very importantly though, before you pick up your hot tools, make sure to prepare your hair with a heat protectant. I use the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle SLEEK IT Iron Straight Hairspray (available on Amazon) which provides heat protection up to 450 degrees.

Once you have your loose curls styled and in place, use a bit of hairspray, such as the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Weather Control Hairspray (available on Amazon) like I do, to ensure that your look will last.

Hair Style Idea 2: Air-Dried Waves

If you’re a girl who prefers not to use hot styling tools or doesn’t have access to any hot tools, another great way to show off the dimension of ribbon highlights is with simple, air-dried locks that have a bit of texture.

After you get out of the shower, spritz your hair with a texturizing spray while it is still damp. I use the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle AIR DRY IT Wave Swept Spray (available on Amazon). What I love about this option is that I don’t even need to reach for my blow-dryer which makes it perfect for a weekend away and I don’t want to pack my blow-dryer.

Just let your locks dry naturally and scrunch up your ends a bit if you’ve got naturally straight hair.
