Where To Keep Your Purse or Handbag At A Restaurant

When you head out to a restaurant, especially one of those family restaurants where they have darkened floors so that you have no idea what all is lurking down there, then where do you put your new favorite handbag. When it is the time to sit down for your meal the last thing that you want to do is have your handbag anywhere near a floor that you have no idea how hygienic it is.

Where do you keep your purse or handbag at a restaurant?

  • Keep your bag on Your Lap Under Your Napkin.
  • Place Your Handbag On Your Chair Between You And The Backrest.
  • Place Your Bag Next To You If You Are Seated At A Booth In The Restaurant.
  • Large Tote Bags Can Be Placed On The Floor As A Last Resort.

This is one of the trickiest things that all of us face when we sit down to eat at a restaurant and that is where we put our handbags. Sometimes we get lucky in this an extra chair at the table and all the ladies can place our handbags on that same chair. That makes life so much easier but most of the time it can get really confusing over where you should place your bag.

However, thankfully that is finishing school etiquette in place for exactly how and where you should rest your handbag while dining out at the restaurant.

Keep Your Bag On Your Lap Under Your Napkin

If you have a small to medium-sized clutch then the ideal place to keep your handbag will be on your lap. You place your napkin over it and it’s by far the safest place to keep your handbag in a restaurant. Nobody will even know that it’s there. What’s more it’s a right at hand should you need a tissue or something from your handbag urgently.

Place Your Handbag On Your Chair Between You And The Backrest

If your handbag is too big, will you find that it will be be too uncomfortable for you to keep on your lap.

A safe place where you can place your handbag will be behind your back on your chair. Obviously what if sitting upright with good posture then there will always be a space between you and the backrest. That gives an ideal spot for your handbag. If you have a jacket with you, place that over the back of the chair which will hide your handbag.

Alternatively, if you’re dining out with a gentleman companion you can always ask him to place his jacket over the back of your chair to help hide your handbag from any prying eyes.

Place Your Bag Next To You If You Are Seated At A Booth In The Restaurant

Sometimes your group that is dining out is lucky enough to secure a booth.

That means that there is ample space for you to place your handbag next to you right at your hip. Bear in mind that when you have your handbag next to your hip, be sure to have it away from the entrance to the booth. That way your handbag is just that little bit more secure.

Large Tote Bags Can Be Placed On The Floor As A Last Resort

Having a large tote-bag will be the one possibility when etiquette dictates that you could place your bag on the floor as a last resort.

When you have a large tote bag, for instance something like a diaper bag and laptop case or some other similar type of really large bag make sure that you bring a large napkin large enough to fit underneath your large bag.

Find a spot on the floor next to you, at your feet. Ideally you will want to be sitting at a table that is against the wall. Place the napkin on the floor by your feet on the wall side of your seat and then place your large bag safely on top of the napkin you’ve brought along just for that purpose.

Never place your bag on the floor on the open side of your seat. Not only is your bag at risk of being stolen, there is also a chance that your server could trip over your bag while moving between tables.

This to my mind would be the only acceptable time to place your handbag on the floor while eating out. When I’ve had a large bag with me I invariably ask a server if there are any vacant chairs at all that could be placed at my table to store my large bag.

Things You Should Never Do With Your Handbag At A Restaurant

  • Never place your handbag on the floor unless it is a very large bag that cannot fit on your lap, beside you, or behind you on your chair.
  • Never drape your handbag over the back of your chair. It can easily be stolen. It will also get in the way of your server, who is trying to balance foods and drinks and suchlike and trying to serve you.
  • Don’t place your handbag on the table. It just screams unclassy. It’s also a good way to get food splattered on your bag. Plus, your handbag will only get in the way once your server starts placing dishes on the table. So, no matter how small, or how precious, or how much you want to show off your new designer bag, on top of the table is just simply not the place for your handbag.
  • Don’t ask another person at your table to put you’ll hand back on their lap on the chair behind them take care of your own handbag.
  • Never hand your handbag in the coat check. There is a very good chance that you will either never see your handbag again or you will get it back a whole lot lighter because it has been liberated of the valuables inside.

Now you know the social etiquette of how to handle your handbag while dining out at the restaurant. so now go and enjoy yourself while dining out without being worried about making any social faux pas.
