I am sure that you will have seen this trendy way of hairstyling on at least one of your social media feeds and were wondering how to do it yourself. If that was the case, I can help you. It doesn’t matter whether you have long hair, medium hair, or short hair I have 20 hair scarf styles for you to try out. Let’s take a closer look.

20 Feminine Ways To Wear A Hair Scarf

Even if some might not work for your length of hair, you will find options that help you to get in on this current hair-fashion trend.

Hair Scarf Style 1: Textured And Long

This is the easiest way to wear a head wrap or hair scarf. What makes it simple is you leave your hair down.

If you are using a head wrap, all you have to do is slip it on while leaving your locks as they are. For a hair scarf, wrap it around your head and tie it at the nape of your neck. Your head wrap or hair scarf will then keep your hair out of your face while hiding any oily roots.

I love the way a girly hair scarf elevates any outfit.

If you like wearing clip-in hair extensions like these ones (available on Amazon), wearing your hair scarf will hide the area where your hair extensions are clipped into your hair and will only show the long, flowing locks hanging from below your hair scarf.

If you haven’t got any dry shampoo, you can use a texturizing mist to style your hair quickly and have it smelling fresh at the same time. I use the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Boost It Air-Blown Texture Mist (available on Amazon), to add volume and texture to my hair in a few quick spritzes.

Hair Scarf Style 2: Updo Or Bun

If you want to add another dimension to your favorite updo or bun hairstyle, you can add your hair scarf or head wrap for a splash of color.

Begin by styling your hair into your updo of choice, then add a head wrap to completely transform the look. Irrespective of whether you choose to put your hair into a sophisticated hairstyle or a messy bun, your head wrap or hair scarf will definitely complement your updo in a trendy way.

Using an updo with your head wrap is also a great way to keep your hair out of your face and off your neck on those hot, humid days.

Hair Scarf Style 3: Braids For Days

Braided hairstyles will always be fashionable. You can use a head scarf to take any braid to the next level, no matter whether you like to wear a French, Dutch, or fishtail braid.

By way of example, you can create a simple yet super boho-chic look by parting your hair to the side and styling it in a fishtail braid. Then put on your head wrap and pull a few face-framing strands loose.

If your hair is prone to breaking, you can weave a thin hair scarf into your braid to protect your locks in a colorful way.

Hair Scarf Style 4: Modern PigTails

As you will have seen when you last went shopping for hair scarves or head wraps, you can find them in all sorts of fun patterns and textures. There are plenty of playful options to choose from including polka dots and lace, for example.

If you are in a playful mood you can always ramp up the fun factor by taking a style idea from every girl’s childhood and putting your hair in pigtails. Using thin hair scarves to tie your pigtails eliminates the risk of damaging your hair as elastics would.

Hair Scarf Style 5: Gym Hair

Head wraps come in so many cute colors and textures that they make a great alternative to a traditional gym headband.

If you are still growing out your hair for a ponytail or top knot, your head wrap will keep your hair out of your face while you work out and you can color coordinate it to any cute and trendy girly gym outfit you choose.

Hair Scarf Style 6: Half-Up Bun

Another challenge we face as our hair is growing out to a new length is trying to keep our hair out of our face but still letting our locks hang free. Your solution could be a half-up bun paired with a head scarf.

The way to get the look is to grab a section of hair from temple to temple going toward the back of your head. Put this section of hair into a small bun. Next, grab your hair scarf and wrap it around the bun, and secure it by crisscrossing the two ends.

Hair scarf goals: feel effortlessly chic with a touch of girly glam.

For this look to work, you will want to use a hair scarf that isn’t too long. If it is, you’ll be left with the ends of the scarf longer than your hair.

Hair Scarf Style 7: Accented Top Knot

If you are short on time, and rushing out the door, the classic hairstyle that is the top knot is what many women will choose because it is relatively quick to do. However, I’ve heard many girls say that a top knot hairstyle is boring. The truth is that it doesn’t need to be boring at all.

If you use the top knot hairstyle regularly you should consider sprucing up the look with a head wrap or hair scarf.

Hair scarf, the perfect accessory for a girly girl.

What you do is wrap the scarf around the base of your bun for an on-trend, accented style. What’s more, the sheer variety of scarves available to you means that you won’t run out of stylish options.

Hair Scarf Style 8: Full Coverage

The classic way to use a scarf to protect your hair or cover up a bad hair day is the full coverage option. This also works if you are just starting to grow your hair out and it is at that length where it feels impossible to get your hair into or hold any style at all.

If you’ve never tried to do a full-coverage hair scarf, don’t worry. Let’s go over exactly how to wrap your hair with a scarf.

Start by clipping all of your hair up into a style that keeps your locks close to your head, such as a French twist for example. If you have short hair then your hair will already be close to your head.

Feel oh-so-feminine with your hair scarf.

Take a square silk hair scarf and fold it in half to form a triangle. Place the straight edge of the scarf along the nape of your neck. Next, bring the two ends of the triangle to the front of your head. Make sure to pull the tip of the triangle so that it falls forward over your forehead.

Now that you have the scarf in position, tie the two ends by crisscrossing them. To finish, tuck the tip of the triangle into the knot you’ve just created.

Hair Scarf Style 9: Accessorize Your Ends

If you love wearing your hair in a braid, you don’t have to limit yourself to wearing your head wrap or scarf as a headband.

What you can do instead, is tie the scarf at the end of your braid by wrapping it around your hair tie and take the look of your hair tie to the next level.

Hair Scarf Style 10: Scarfed Braid

When it comes to doing endurance sports like distance running, braided hair is the best way I have found for keeping my hair out of my face for all the hours running ultra-distance events. Top triathlete, Lucy Charles Barkley, has even incorporated braided hair into her personal brand with her signature “battle braids” for race day.

We can all agree that braided hair looks cute, but if you want to know what’s cuter than a braid, it’s a braid with a fun, colorful hair scarf woven into it.

In order to get the look, begin by splitting your hair into three sections. Wrap your scarf around your middle strand, leaving an equal length of the scarf on either side. Then, combine each scarf end with the side sections of your hair, and braid your hair as you normally would. It’s as easy as that.

Hair Scarf Style 11: Bubble Ponytail

The bubbly ponytail could easily become one of your favorite hair scarf styles. It is a fun, carefree look that is perfect for a hot summer day or vacation look.

Start by putting your hair into a high ponytail. Then, tie small hair scarves down the length of your ponytail, about two inches apart. Finish by fluffing out each section to create your bubbles and you’re all set.

This is a great hair scarf style to do with your ponytail hair extension. To learn more about ponytail hair extensions, here is the Pink Femme article that covers this in more detail.

Hair Scarf Style 12: Low Ponytail

A low ponytail has always been a simple hairstyle to create and is just as simple to upgrade using a hair scarf.

A hair scarf is a perfect way to add a touch of elegance to any look.

Start by putting your hair into your usual low pony. All you then need to do is tie the scarf at the base of your ponytail and let the ends hang down.

Hair Scarf Style 13: Bow Headband

I am sure that you’ve seen this retro hair scarf style circulating in social media feeds lately. The good news is that you can rock it too no matter what the length of your hair is.

Just wrap your scarf around the base of your neck and then tie it at the top of your head, forming a bow. If your hair is short, you can style your fringe/bangs the way you want them. For longer hair, you can then let your remaining hair fall down or style it into an updo, or even a ponytail. The choice is yours.

Hair Scarf Style 14: Braided Halo

If you love the romantic vibes a halo braid creates, you can take it a step further with the help of a head scarf.

Simply incorporate a scarf into your braid. The way you do this is by placing the center of the scarf under the middle strand and adding the two ends to each side strand of hair. Once you have your scarf ready to go, follow the steps in a halo braid tutorial, I will soon be adding an article called “Look Like an Angel: Mixed Halo Braid Tutorial” that will show you exactly how to get the look.

Hair Scarf Style 15: Half-Up Pony

Remember the half-up bun hairstyle that I mentioned earlier? You can create a similar style by doing a half-up ponytail.

Add a touch of romance to your hair with a delicate hair scarf.

By now you can probably guess how to style this with a hair scarf. What you do is put the top section of your hair into a party-style ponytail, and then wrap the base of your ponytail with your scarf to create a super-cute style.

Hair Scarf Style 16: Accent Braid

The way to get this creative style is to grab a section of hair from the side of your part and split it into three pieces. Place the center of your scarf underneath the middle of the three strands and begin French braiding your hair, incorporating the scarf into the braid as you go.

Braid toward the back of your head. Then secure the braid in place with bobby pins behind your ear. Once you have secured the braid in place, allow the rest of your hair as well as the ends of your scarf to hang down.

Hair Scarf Style 17: Knotted Headband

Here is another way to wear your hair scarf as a headband that can also work for short hair.

To get the knotted headband look, begin by putting your hair into a pineapple updo or something similar. Girls with short hair can skip this step.

Next, hold your scarf by either end and place it so that the middle is at the nape of your neck. Then, bring the ends forward and double-knot them at the front of your head by crisscrossing twice.

Once you have the ends knotted, tuck the extra cloth into itself back along the knotted scarf toward the back of your head so there’s no free-hanging material.

Hair scarves: the ultimate girly accessory.

To finish, gently tug at the knot you created to add a bit of volume. Adding volume to the knot will soften the edges and look even more femme.

Hair Scarf Style 18: Low Bun Wrap

What I have noticed with hair scarf styles is that sometimes keeping things simple is the best option.

For this option, put your hair into a low bun, and then tie your hair scarf around the base of the bun to complete the look.

Hair Scarf Style 19: Mid-Braid

I am sure that by now you can tell that I love the head wrap/hair scarf and braid combo.

To create this hairstyle, you can braid your hair any way you choose. For instance, traditional three-strand, fishtail, and French are the first three recommendations that come to mind. After you’ve finished braiding your hair, tie your hair scarf halfway down the braid for a statement look.

Hair Scarf Style 20: Crisscross Pony

To finish off, let’s look at a hair scarf style that works with long hair or a long-hair wig. When you have long hair, the high ponytail is the quickest and easiest feminine-looking style you can pull your hair into. Here is an equally easy way to give your ponytail an upgrade with a head scarf.

Start by putting your mane into a high ponytail. Once you have your ponytail done, wrap the center of your scarf once around the base of your pony. Then, take either end of the scarf and wrap it around your ponytail in a crisscross motion.

This hair scarf style will hold the full length of your ponytail in place and is great on a windy day when you don’t want the ends of your ponytail blowing around and getting in your face or becoming a mess of tangles.

This is another great hair scarf style to combine with your ponytail hair extensions. To learn more about ponytail hair extensions, here is the article that I wrote on Pink Femme all about them. Why not check that out next?
