Summer is all about spending time at the beach. There is something super relaxing about lying on the sand and listening to the sound of the ocean waves. What’s more, it gives you a great chance to work on those bikini tan lines we love so much.
I know that a trip to the beach is all about chilling out. Often the last thing that you want to worry about is putting a lot of thought into your beach makeup look. That is totally fine. I am all for being bare-faced on the beach when the heat and humidity can make makeup look less than stellar very quickly.
That being said, think about it for a moment. You are on the beach wearing your favorite bikini. What better time than now to snap some gorgeous pics for your Instagram. So, if you’re planning to turn your beach day into a photoshoot, you may want to wear a bit of makeup. Just remember that often midday touch-ups will be a necessity.
For those occasions, I have a few beach makeup tips and ideas for you.
Get Your Sun Protection Routine In Order
The single most important thing that you need to take care of, before you even think of makeup is your beach skin care.
Please girls make sure your sun protection routine is in order. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day, but your sun protection routine shouldn’t end there. My experiences on the beach are that lately, SPF 15 has not been enough. I use SPF 30.
The FDA also states that you should reapply sunscreen at least every two hours (or immediately after swimming or sweating), limit your time in the sun during peak hours (from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and cover up exposed skin by wearing long sleeves, pants, sunglasses, and a broad-brimmed hat.
Applying sunscreen should be the last step in your skincare routine before you move onto makeup.
Keep Things Simple
While your normal day-to-day makeup routine will likely be comprised of primer, foundation, concealer, and other complexion-perfecting products, it could be a good idea to simplify things for a day at the beach.
The last thing you want is to have to worry about touching up your makeup while you’re hanging out with friends or after taking a dip in the ocean.
If you don’t plan on getting wet and do want to put on a few products, think about using powder products with a matte finish.
Powder makeup has the ability to absorb some of your sweat, keeping your makeup looking fresh for longer. That is why the makeup artists in television studios go for matte finish powders to cope with those hot studio lights.
Under the hot sun liquid products with a radiant finish will end up making you look greasy.
Reach For BB Cream And Not Foundation
If you want a little coverage for your complexion, consider opting for a BB Cream as it’s a multi-purpose product. That way you won’t have to apply separate color-correcting concealer, regular concealer, and foundation.
Apply Bronzer For A Golden Glow
If it is your first day at the beach you won’t want to show off the fact in the photos you post. So, get your glow on while at the beach by applying a matte bronzer.
Like I said earlier, shimmering liquid makeup may end up making you look greasy, so help create a golden-looking glow with a powder bronzer.
While you’re at it, use your powder bronzer to enhance your cleavage to make your new bikini top “pop” even more. For more details on how to enhance your cleavage with makeup, here is the article that I wrote to teach you exactly that.
Brighten The Look Of Your Complexion With Blush
Perk up the look of your skin with a natural-looking flush. Apply some stick blush to the apples of your cheeks. Even better, toss your stick blush in your beach bag for easy touch-ups while on the go.
To use, simply apply a single stroke to each cheekbone and lightly blend out with your fingertips. Please make sure that your fingertips are properly clean after so that you don’t smudge makeup on your beautiful bikini.
Wear Waterproof Mascara
This wouldn’t be a discussion about beach makeup roundup if I didn’t mention waterproof mascara.
If you’re going to the beach and wanting to flaunt your lashes, then wearing a waterproof mascara is pretty much a must.
That way, whether you decide to take a dip in the ocean or work up a sweat while soaking up the sun, your mascara won’t run down your face.
Swipe On Some Lip Gloss
If you really want to go all out for a bold lip look, then go for it.
However, if you want to embrace a beach babe look, you should skip the lipstick and use a subtle lip gloss instead.
Choose a hydrating formula to keep your lips smooth and soft.
Hydrate Your Skin With A Face Mist
In addition to providing skin with an envy-inducing glow, using a hydrating facial mist will also help cool you down on those hot summer beach days. It will also keep your skin hydrated under the beating sun.
Spritz on some before you head to the beach and keep it in your bag so you can spritz throughout the day.
Use A Long-Wear Brow Gel
Of course, we all want to complete our look with bold, filled-in brows.
But what is going to happen when you sweat under the sun or jump in the water for a swim?
Your average eyebrow makeup will likely slip and slide down your face, bringing ugly, smudged smears with it. This will make for a less than optimal makeup situation when you are trying to look your best while enjoying a day at the beach.
To avoid this unwanted scenario entirely, use a long-lasting, waterproof brow gel.
