I am sure that you know the feeling of being totally exhausted by the time you need to be getting ready for bed. The last thing that you are in the mood for is removing your makeup. However, removing your makeup before bed is one of the most important parts of your beauty routine.
Sleeping with your makeup on is a mistake as it causes clogged pores that can lead to breakouts. Your makeup will also settle deep into any fine lines on your face and make them look like deep wrinkles the next day. Your makeup will block your night cream from getting to your skin.
Even if it feels like you don’t have the energy to take off your makeup before crashing into bed at night, there are three distinct reasons why sleeping with makeup on is a bad idea. Let’s take a look at those three reasons and also the best way to do so quickly and effectively.
3 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Sleep In Your Makeup
I know that sometimes you’re exhausted when you get home after a long day (or night), but makeup removal is vital.
When you don’t remove everything before you go to bed, it can impact your skin in a bad way. These are the three reasons why you should always remove your makeup at night.
1: Sleeping With Makeup On Can Lead To Breakouts
When you sleep with your foundation on, it mixes with the dirt and oil on the surface of your skin that has built up throughout the day. This can easily lead to clogged pores, which causes breakouts.
2: Sleeping With Makeup On Can Result In A Dull-Looking Complexion In The Morning
If you have a tendency toward dry skin this can be even worse for you.
Sleeping in your makeup, your day-old foundation, powder, and eye makeup can settle into your creases and fine lines. This causes your skin to look dull. This build-up in your fine lines will make you look older than you really are when you get up in the morning. The opposite of what you want.
3: Sleeping With Makeup On Can Block Your Night-Time Anti-Aging Efforts
Your anti-aging skincare products need to absorb into your skin to be effective. If you apply them on top of your makeup at night, they can’t get to your skin to work like they’re supposed to. For best results, you should apply your anti-aging skincare products on clean skin every time.
The Best Ways To Remove Your Makeup Before Bed
Even if you can hardly keep your eyes open, here are a few really quick and easy ways to remove your makeup that won’t sacrifice any beauty sleep.
Try one of these options to wipe off your makeup and enjoy a good night’s rest.
1: Micellar Water Is The Best Option For Removing Makeup
This is my favorite makeup cleansing method. It has French origins and works like magic
Micellar water is a gentle, no-rinse cleansing option that has micelles (a.k.a. oil molecules) that are suspended in water. Micellar water acts like a magnet to lift away dirt, oil, and makeup without any harsh rubbing.
To remove face makeup, saturate a cotton pad with micellar water and wipe it across your skin. For eye makeup removal, hold the saturated pad in place over closed eyes for a few seconds, then wipe.
2: Makeup Removing Towelettes Are Wonderful When You’re On The Go
Using wipes is probably one of the easiest ways to remove your makeup at the end of a long day.
I keep a pack stashed in my purse, but having a pack on your nightstand is also a good idea so you can easily use them before sleep.
The L’Oréal Paris Ideal Clean Makeup Removing Towelettes (available on Amazon) that I use can gently cleanse and remove all my makeup, even waterproof makeup.
All you do is gently wipe your face with a towelette and you’re good to go. Just remember to reseal the pack so that the rest of the wipes don’t dry out.
One downside of using wipes is that they are not environmentally friendly. That is why the pack I have in my purse is for makeup emergencies only.
On the flip side, I will always have wipes in my hand luggage when I’m traveling. That way I can always remove my makeup before sleep on a long-haul flight.
3: Cleansing Oil Is Wonderful For Long-Wear Makeup
If you are the kind of girl that loves to wear heavy eye makeup like the classic smoky eye, then cleansing oil is a good option for you.
Cleansing oil can break down long-wear makeup. Apply just a few drops to a cotton pad and dab it onto your skin. The oil will re-liquefy the oils in the makeup and lift it off.
Just remember to follow up with your regular cleanser like micellar water afterward.
Cleansing oil is essential for heavy stage makeup and the kinds of special effects makeup that you’d use for Halloween. Synchronized swimmers always carry plenty of cleansing oil in their swim bag too.
What To Do After You Have Removed Your Makeup
Once you have finished wiping off all your makeup including mascara, apply a good moisturizer to help lock in hydration while you sleep.
That way you can wake up with a better complexion and have a younger-looking face in the mirror when you get up. That is what I do and I’m happy with the results as I get closer to my mid-50’s.
