What You Should Know Before Getting A Brazilian Wax

I am sure that you and I are alike in that we try and avoid painful beauty treatments. However, one exception that I make is my Brazilian wax session.

Key things to know before getting a Brazilian wax:

  • Exfoliate Your Skin A Day Before Your Waxing Appointment
  • Your Hair Should Be A Quarter-Inch Long Before Getting Waxed
  • Don’t Scrub Your Skin Too Soon After Getting Waxed
  • Avoid Tight Clothing For At Least 24 Hours After Getting Waxed
  • Don’t Touch Your Bikini Area For 24 Hours After Getting Waxed

Let’s get you ready for your first Brazilian so that you don’t feel intimidated by the process thanks to the tips that I have for you.

Bikini Wax VS. Brazillian Wax: Know The Difference

There are some girls that believe that bikini waxing and Brazilian waxing are one and the same. Not quite. Both of these methods remove hair from your bikini zone, there are key differences to each technique.

A bikini wax consists of removing hair around the perimeter of your bikini line area, making it a much quicker process. This means that you’d be able to wear a bikini, and no hair would be visible from the sides. This method is great for those who are not comfortable removing all of their hair but still want to groom that area a bit.

On the other hand, Brazilian waxing removes all of the hair from your bikini area. Every strand of hair from the side, front, top, and back are removed. However, you do have the option of leaving a small strip of hair. Think of it as the next step up from the traditional bikini wax. If you prefer your bikini area to be completely bare, a Brazilian wax may be your perfect match.

Understanding Hard Wax VS. Soft Wax

When it comes to getting a Brazilian wax, there are two wax types that may be used during your session: soft wax and hard wax.

Soft wax is typically used with cloth strips to remove hair from your body. This type of wax is often used to remove hair on the armpits, legs, arms, and bikini area. During the waxing process, the wax adheres to the skin and hair, which might be uncomfortable for some people.

On the flip side, hard wax is applied to the skin with thick layers at a time. Once the wax hardens, it’s removed without the need for cloth strips. Hard wax is known to only grip hair, making it a great option for those who suffer from sensitive skin or are prone to ingrown hairs. Hard wax is most often used for Brazilian wax treatments because of skin sensitivity in that area.

You can expect your Brazilian bikini wax to last for between four and six weeks before the hair starts growing back. However, everyone’s hair grows at different rates, so this timeline can vary a bit from person to person. I’ve noticed that hair grows back differently at different times of the year too.

Can You Do A Brazillian Wax At Home?

It may be possible to save money by taking care of hair removal all on your own. I would strongly advise against trying to DIY your Brazilian wax whenever possible.

For starters, you likely don’t have the expertise, knowledge, and resources that professionals have for waxing such a sensitive area. In addition, you will likely not be able to wax hard-to-reach areas all on your own.

This increases the risk of injury, pain, or reactions, so keep it simple and rely on a licensed professional to get the job done properly.

The cost of getting a professional wax will differ from region to region and facility to facility. However, if you want incredibly smooth skin with minimal irritation, you might be able to justify the cost.

When I go for waxing, I have the salon do my legs and bikini area together and part of a complete spa treatment. One way that some girls do save money is by waxing their legs at home and just have the salon do their bikini area.

5 Brazilian Wax Tips To Remember For Your First Wax

Now that you have learned about what a Brazilian wax is and what you can expect, let’s look at how you should prepare for the wax. Follow my tips below to get your skin prepared and keep it in fabulous shape.

Exfoliate Your Skin A Day Before Your Waxing Appointment

We already know that it’s really important to exfoliate your skin as part of your general skincare routine, the same basic rule applies before your waxing.

You will want to remove the dead skin cells from your bikini area to get more precise and easier hair removal.

Your Hair Should Be A Quarter-Inch Long Before Getting Waxed

When you go to all the effort and expense of booking yourself a waxing your goal will be to remove all of your hair. However, but if your hair is not at least a quarter-inch long, it can be difficult for the wax to adhere to it. If the wax does not grip the hair it will stay behind.

Allow your hair to grow out fully or else you will never achieve your desired result. If your hair is longer than a quarter-inch, some wax specialists will trim your hair before the wax if necessary. That is up to your beautician. To play it safe, try to grow out your hair to be between one-sixth of an inch and half an inch long, ideally somewhere in between.

Don’t Scrub Your Skin Too Soon After Getting Waxed

From a personal perspective, I never exfoliate my bikini area until a week has passed after my waxing.

To help keep ingrown hairs and irritation at bay, it’s essential to exfoliate your skin. However, exfoliating too soon after waxing can have adverse effects.

To stay in the clear, you can begin exfoliating your bikini area two to three days after your wax session. And even after waiting a few days, you’ll want to be gentle.

Avoid Tight Clothing For At Least 24 Hours After Getting Waxed

Once your skin has been waxed, it will be sensitive for the first 24 hours after the waxing. I know that mine is, so you are not alone.

Your best option will be to wear loose clothing before and after your wax appointment to allow your skin to breathe.

Tight clothing can easily irritate the skin and may cause an infection to occur.

Don’t Touch Your Bikini Area For 24 Hours After Getting Waxed

I know that we all love to feel how soft and smooth our skin is after our waxing, you’ll want to keep your hands above your waist.

Since your hands are often exposed to dirt, oil, and bacteria, it will be best to keep clear of that area to avoid transferring bacteria down there.

After all, it’s not worth having to tackle a completely avoidable irritation as a result. Also, make sure not to hit the beach and expose your bikini area to the sun right after waxing as the skin will be sensitive. To play it safe, wait around 24 hours before sun exposure.
