What Is Makeup Primer And How To Apply It

When it comes to all the various makeup products, I’d consider makeup primer like the one product that can make the biggest difference in how well my makeup lasts through the day.

I know the frustration of looking at your face in the mirror and noticing that your makeup has started to fade in the middle of the day. Or potentially even worse, seeing how your lipstick or eye shadow has migrated to other parts of your face.

The question arises of how you can avoid any of this happening. The answer is makeup primer. Let’s take a closer look at what that is and how it can make your makeup application process better.

What Is Makeup Primer

Makeup primer is designed to help create a smooth canvas on which to apply the rest of your makeup products, as well as to help your makeup stay in place throughout the day. There are different primers specifically for the face, eyes, lashes, and lips.

Using primer for face and eye makeup can also be useful if you have oily skin and tend to have issues with makeup moving around during the day. Primers will often have formulas that resemble serums, creams, or even tinted moisturizers. However, some can even come in the form of face mists.

Are you ready to try out makeup primer for yourself and see what a difference it can make? Here are a couple of easy tutorials on how to apply the different makeup primers so that you can help prevent a midday makeup disaster and create a more seamless makeup application routine at the same time.

How To Apply Face Primer

Next time you find yourself reaching for your foundation and concealer right away as you start your makeup routine, stop. Now is a good time to try your makeup primer. Face primer is the answer to keeping your face makeup in place day and night.

Using primer does not negate proper skincare, so after completing the final step in your skincare routine, apply your primer dot by dot onto your skin. You will want to blend the primer in a gentle circular motion over your entire face or to targeted areas.

You can either wear your makeup primer alone or under foundation for a smoother, more even application and longer wear time.

Certain primers can even be mixed with foundation. In this instance, you can apply the concoction using a makeup blender, with quick dabbing and rolling motions to blend out the mixture.

There is a face primer for just about anyone. There are options whether you’re looking to combat redness, mattify your skin, or give your face a highlighted effect.

I prefer a matte finish, so I use L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Matte Makeup Primer (available on Amazon). I like this primer’s matte finish as it stops shining and blurs out imperfections. It gives me a perfect canvas for my other makeup products, like the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation (available on Amazon) and L’Oréal Paris Pro-Matte Powder (available on Amazon).

Besides choosing your primer based on your skincare concerns and makeup needs, I have found it beneficial to match my primer to my foundation.

How To Apply Eye Primer

When I first started doing all-day makeup for an internship during my summer break while I was at college I noticed that my eye makeup tended to smudge quite easily and my eyeliner would fade by the end of the day. I also noticed that the pigments of my eye shadow would fade as the day went on.

I asked a friend who was studying at beauty school for advice and she told me that I should try using an eye primer first, before applying my eye makeup. In case you were wondering, the fix to my eye makeup problems was that easy. It might be the solution you need as well.

Apply a little bit of eye primer onto your eyelids, gently blending it with your ring finger. I am always very gentle as my lids can bruise very easily.

Also, if you wear eyeliner along your lower lash line or you like to add just a little shadow beneath your eyes, you should apply primer there as well.

The three main purposes for using an eye primer as a way to prepare for your eye makeup are: it helps to create a smooth base for easier eye makeup application, it locks your look in place, and it will even make eye shadows appear more vibrant than before.

If you are a fair-skinned girl, then this hack will make your life easier. If you get frustrated when you see your veins through the thin skin of your eyelids, then you should choose an eye makeup primer with a tint that matches your skin tone. That way your primer will hide your veins and won’t distract from your overall makeup look.

How To Apply Eyelash Primer

There was a time in my life when I would add layer after layer of mascara in an attempt to add volume to my lashes. More often than not I would just end up with clumped and smudged mascara which was hardly the look I was going for.

Then I discovered lash primer and it made a massive difference. if you also can’t go a day without using mascara, then I would strongly suggest that you consider adding eyelash primer to your makeup routine. I can’t see any reason not to use an eyelash primer. It helps my lashes look longer and more voluminous without the clumped and smudged mascara I used to have.

You use eyelash primer in the same way that you would use mascara. Place the primer brush at the base of your lashes and gently sweep up to the tip, coating all your lashes with primer. Allow the primer a moment to dry before layering your mascara on top.

Be sure that you completely coat your lashes since lash primers are normally light in color, unlike mascara. This is what I like about eyelash primer. The light color of the primer lets you easily see which lashes don’t have a layer of primer. Then, when I apply mascara, I can also clearly see if any lashes are not properly coated.

If you struggle with mascara clumping like I used to do, then take a look at the article that I wrote all about why your mascara clumps. You can find that article here.

My Favorite Eyelash Primer

Since we are on the Pink Femme website, I am sure that it comes as no surprise that my favorite eyelash primer will be pink.

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara Primer/Base: Here is a great way to add more pink to your life. Yes, even your primed eyelashes can be pastel pink. This eyelash primer is formulated with rose oil, this pink lash primer minimizes flaking to enhance mascara wear while still volumizing my lashes.

How To Apply Lip Primer

I know that rocking a bold lip color is a sure way to grab everyone’s attention on a night out. When I have done that I’ve also spent a fair amount of time worrying about whether my lipstick has gotten on my teeth or looks patchy.  This is where lip primer comes in handy.

Before you swipe on your lipstick, use a lip primer to help smooth everything out to make you’re your lipstick application goes off without a hitch. Once your lips are primed, follow with your lip liner and finish with a long-lasting lipstick.

The process is simple and gives you peace of mind knowing your lip color isn’t going anywhere.

If you are heading out directly from work and don’t have a lip primer on hand, here is a bonus tip/hack for you. Your lip liner can serve the function of a lip primer as well. You can achieve an almost identical priming effect by filling in your lips entirely with a lip liner, not just outlining them.

Why not expand your knowledge even further by reading another makeup/beauty article here on Pink Femme. You can find them either via the menu at the top of the page or by clicking this link that will take you to the list of all the beauty articles.

When it comes to my choices for makeup and beauty products, I only use  L’Oréal Paris (Available on Amazon). I have really sensitive skin and never once have I had any negative reaction to any L’Oréal product.
