What Is A Spoolie And Why You Need One

If you are new to makeup, you may have heard mention of using a spoolie. Your quest for finding out what it is, lead you here.

Let’s do a breakdown of what an eyebrow spoolie is and I’ll even share six beauty hacks you can do with your spoolie brush.

What Is A Spoolie Brush?

In very simple terms a spoolie brush is a mascara wand without the mascara. A spoolie brush is meant to be used to comb through, blend, and shape your eyebrows. Your spoolie brush will make your eyebrow grooming easier and quicker.

A spoolie is the most popular eyebrow grooming tool you’ve likely come across before without ever having realized it.

A spoolie will often be included with various eyebrow makeup products that you buy.

Some eyebrow pencils have spoolies on the opposite end and many brow gels come with a double-ended brush. The brush has a spoolie on one side and an angled brush on the other.

Now that you know what a spoolie is, let’s have a look at what all you can use it for in tour beauty routine.

6 Spoolie Hacks To Try

Aside from grooming your brows, you can actually use a spoolie as a helpful tool throughout your beauty routine.

1. Separate Your Lashes

There are few things worse than nearly finishing a perfect eye makeup look, only to ruin it with clumped, over-applied mascara. When I was starting out I would clean everything off and start from scratch

You don’t need to. That’s where a spoolie brush can come in handy.

Use a clean spoolie to gently comb through your lashes and remove excess mascara in the process. Suddenly you have perfectly coated, separated lashes that are worthy of any eye makeup look.

2. Tame Flyaways

This always seems to happen when I am on my way out in a hurry. Just before picking up my purse to head out the door I will do one last mirror check: outfit, makeup, and hair.

Invariably there will be a few irritating flyaways. Those out-of-place hairs appearing at the top of my hairdo would often be the cause of me being late. Not anymore.

What I do is spray a little hairspray onto a clean spoolie. Then I just comb the spoolie through my flyaways to smooth and tame them in a single easy swipe.

3. Remove Nail Polish

This is a hack that I will use more often at office than at home. When I am at work and I notice badly chipped nail polish during the day I will usually just remove all my nail polish and repaint later at home.

What used to happen is I would use a cotton pad to remove my nail polish only to end up with more polish on my fingertips than on the pad thanks to the pad soaking through in my hurry.

Nowadays, I use a spoolie for quick, and efficient nail polish removal. I dip a clean spoolie into an acetone nail polish remover, then rub it over my nail until its polish-free.

Side note. I cleaned out one of my old, dried out mascaras, filled it with acetone nail polish remover and keep it in my desk drawer. If you do that too, make sure that you label the acetone one clearly in case you later mistake it for real mascara.

4. Enhance False Lashes

One of the key factors that make cheaper false lashes look fake and cheap is that the individual lash hairs tend to get clomped together. Allow a spoolie to help you.

Use a clean spoolie to brush the hairs back and forth horizontally. This will separate the individual lash hairs and give the lash strip a fluffier, wispier, and more voluminous appearance.

Suddenly your set of false lashes looks a whole lot more stylish.

5. Exfoliate Your Lips

A spoolie on your lips. I bet you didn’t think of this one.

Exfoliating your pout is always important. The buildup of dead skin on your lips can be rather unsightly. Even after caking on way too much lipstick, dead skin buildup still shows through eventually.

For a quick, gentle lip exfoliation method in a pinch, dip a clean spoolie into warm water before brushing it back and forth over your lips.

This hack is super useful on vacation when you don’t have your full range of beauty products available.

6. Groom Lash Extensions

Have you ever had eyelash extensions done? If so you will know the frustration of getting up in the morning and your lash extensions have gotten tangled overnight.

If left alone the tangled lashes will eventually rip off pulling healthy lashes with them.

However, with the help of your spoolie, the upkeep doesn’t have to be so painfully time-consuming. Brush your lash extensions with a clean spoolie In the morning and at night.

For me what works best is brushing my lashes with a spoolie at the same time as when I do my morning and evening skincare routine.
