Every girl deserves to have at least one versatile A-line skirt in her wardrobe. My A-line skirts are very comfortable to wear and I can style them for just about any occasion.
An A-Line skirt is a skirt that hangs in the shape of an A in a straight line from a cinched waist to a flared hemline. The term A-Line can be used to describe dresses, coats, and tops as well. Christian Dior introduced the concept in his 1955 A-Line collection.

What Are The Significant Features Of A-Line Skirts?
A-Line skirts tend to have a fitted waistband, sit around the knee and flare out from the hip to the hem. There are also shorter and longer lengths available. Regardless of the length of the skirt, it will give the wearer plenty of space to move around and as you might have guessed…this skirt resembles the capital letter ‘A’. The term ‘A-Line’ is used to describe not only skirts but other garments too such as dresses, coats, and tops.
What Are The Origins Of A-Line Skirts?
In 1955 Christian Dior launched his ‘A-Line’ collection which featured flared coats and matching dresses with full, flared, and pleated skirts. So, it’s pretty safe to say that it was Dior who made the A-Line silhouette popular and fashionable at that time, although we can probably assume that the A-Line silhouette was around prior to the 50s.
Skip to 1958, after Dior sadly passed away, and it was Dior’s employee Yves Saint Laurent who launched a collection of A-Line dresses under the Dior name. These dresses were simpler in design and more closely resemble the A-Line skirts that we wear today. Then in the 60s, the A-Line skirt was a huge runaway success after the First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy, wore them causing millions of other women to do the same!
What Figure/Body Shape Is Best Suited To A-Line Skirts?
Most body types are actually suited to the A-Line skirt simply because it is flattering and can hide the hips/thighs and tummy quite well or give the illusion of hips. It really boils down to the length of the skirt, style, or pattern. But if you have a derriere that is on the larger side then the A-Line skirt may not hang quite right on you and may even make your bottom look bigger so beware!
Which Kinds Of Tops Can You Pair With A-Line Skirts?
The best tops are close-fitting ones as they will balance out the shape of the A-Line skirt quite well. Good options are turtle necks, slim-fit knit jumpers or blouses, tucked in. Fitted jackets or cardigans with a simple top look fab also.
In the summer, go for a cap sleeve t-shirt for a cool, casual look. And when it gets a little colder, switch to a long-sleeve one.
What Shoes Work Best With A-Line Skirts?
The wider the A-Line skirt, the shorter it can make you look so heels are always a good option. Go for pointed stilettos, T-bar heeled sandals, open-toe heels with ankle strap, peep-toe/strappy wedges, or chunky platforms heels.
Round/pointed ballet flats or cute flat sandals are great for those who don’t want to wear heels. Stylish trainers can also work well for a casual look, especially with shorter skirts. During Autumn/Winter, you can pair knee-high boots with your skirt or opt for ankle boots and tights.
There are just so many shoes that go well with the A-Line skirt – it really is a versatile garment!
