Learn About the Ultra Feminine Tulip Skirt

Every time I wear a tulip skirt I feel feminine and pretty thanks to the mental image that I have of being wrapped in the petals of a flower.

A tulip skirt resembles a partially open tulip flower that has been flipped upside down. The tulip skirt dates back to 1953 when Christian Dior launched his “Tulip line” collection. Tulip skirts look great on both rectangle and inverted triangle body shapes.

Let’s learn all there is to know about the pretty tulip skirt and how you can style it into an outfit.

What Are The Significant Features Of Tulip Skirts?

A tulip skirt is a very pretty item of clothing that resembles the head of a partially opened tulip flower, just flipped upside down! Tulip skirts curve at the sides have a waistband and a tapered hemline. At the front of the skirt, one side typically overlaps over the other so you could say that this aspect of the skirt is similar to a wrap-over skirt. Tulip skirts tend to sit around the knee but there are different lengths available. And depending on how it’s cut, this skirt can expose a little extra leg or a lot at the front!

What Are The Origins Of Tulip Skirts?

To answer this, we need to head back to Spring 1953 when Christian Dior launched his ”Tulip Line” collection. This was his second revolutionary line and was influenced by…flowers. There was one close-fitting dress in the collection, unofficially named the “Tulip” dress, that featured a bodice with a V-shaped neckline, cinched waist, and skirt that puffed out around the hips but got tighter towards the knee. It was an off-the-shoulder number that made a beautiful silhouette and gave us the shape of the tulip skirt that we recognize today.

And if we look at the skirt of Dior’s Mexico evening dress, which was part of the same collection, it features a layer of fabric placed over another. So, this feature of the tulip skirt appears to have come from this dress.

What Figure/Body Shape Is Best Suited To Tulip Skirts?

The tulip skirt can give the appearance of hips so it would look great on both rectangle and inverted triangle body shapes. Hourglass shapes can also wear this skirt and look fabulous in it as it shows off the waist and glides over the hips.

However, pear and apple body shapes may want to avoid this one as this skirt can make the hips look bigger and won’t do much for the apple waist!

Which Kinds Of Tops Can You Pair With Tulip Skirts?

Close-fitting tops are the way to go when it comes to tulip skirts as they will give you a better silhouette. So, go for camisole tops, off the shoulder tops, turtle neck jumpers, and slim-fit blouses, tucked in,

To make it casual, pair a short tulip skirt with a long-sleeved crop top or short-sleeved t-shirt. And if you’re wearing a plain colored tulip skirt then floral tops, striped tops, polka dot tops, or just a plain top in a contrasting color will give you a simple yet sophisticated look.

What Shoes Work Best With Tulip Skirts?

As tulip skirts are quite feminine by their nature it has to be strappy sandals or open-toe shoes with an ankle strap as either heels or flats. Pointed stilettos will look amazing too as will pointed flats. Peep-toe shoes are another good option or you could go for peep-toe ankle boots when summer is over.

And if you can match the color of your shoes to the skirt then that will make the skirt, your hips, and your waist the main attraction!
