When it comes to the world of makeup, there is a lot to learn. Aside from stocking up on the best makeup products for your complexion, learning the best possible way to apply these products can change a look from good to stunning. That comes from having the right tools and knowing how to use them. One tool that needs your attention is the versatile stippling brush, especially if your goal is full-coverage makeup that looks flawless.
A stippling brush is a makeup brush that has two layers of bristles in different lengths. The longer bristles pick up the makeup product and the shorter, denser bristles push the makeup from the longer bristles onto your skin in tiny dots giving you full coverage and an airbrushed look.
Let’s take a closer look at the stippling brush and see how you can elevate your makeup game with this vital tool that is used by makeup artists to great effect.
What Is A Stippling Brush?
If you are just starting out with makeup there is a real possibility that your makeup brush collection doesn’t include a stippling brush.
I would strongly suggest that you add one as soon as possible.
Whereas traditional foundation brushes have a single layer of bristles, stippling brushes have two layers of bristles. The top layer is what picks up the makeup product you’re going to apply, while the bottom layer of bristles is denser, helping to push the product onto your skin rather than having your bristles absorb the makeup. Often, these two layers of bristles will come in different colors to make it easy to see which is which.
When you stipple your makeup, you are essentially applying your makeup product in tiny dots that are so close together they blend for a flawless finish. With a stippling brush, the top layer of bristles creates those dots for you and the lower layer presses the dots to your skin.
The end result is an airbrushed appearance with full makeup coverage, making this technique ideal for people who have blemishes or any other imperfections they want to hide. Essentially this is for anyone who wants to create a flawless-looking complexion.
In my opinion, it is the perfect makeup application brush for trans girls as well.
How To Use A Stippling Brush
You can apply almost any makeup product that has a liquid or cream formula seamlessly by using a stippling brush. This type of brush is perfect for applying foundation. However, you can also use it to contour, apply blush and bronzer. Are you ready to start using your stippling brush? Here are the two easy steps you need to learn.
Choose Your Stippling Brush
Remember that stippling brushes come in various sizes, so be sure to choose one that suits your specific makeup needs.
A larger brush generally works better for foundation, while a smaller size can give you better precision when it comes to applying your cream blushes.
Apply Your Product And Blend Away
As I mentioned earlier, products with cream or liquid formulas apply best with a stippling brush.
Reach for your foundation and apply a small amount of foundation onto your face by dotting on the product. Then grab a large stippling brush and begin quickly dabbing the brush along your skin to blend the foundation in.
Feel free to keep building up your layer of foundation until you get even coverage across your entire face. The important factor is that you blend by dabbing the brush and not by “brushing” across your skin.
The same basic idea applies when it comes to contouring. Grab your desired contour shaping stick. Swipe the foundation across the areas you want to chisel and shape, like the forehead and cheeks, and then use a small stippling brush to blend it onto your skin until you get a natural finish. Again, you will be blending by dabbing your smaller stippling brush in the product on your face.
Don’t use a large stippling brush when applying your blush and contour products. A large brush will spread out more product than needed and make it much harder for you to blend it out in a way that creates the contrast that you need.
When it comes to blush, use a blush shaping stick and swipe your stippling brush directly across the shaping stick to transfer the blush onto the outer bristles.
This will help you create a natural-looking flush and make it much easier to build up more color if needed. Dab the brush onto your cheeks in circular motions, and you’ll be good to go.
How To Care For Your Stippling Brush
By now, you ought to know the importance of keeping your makeup brushes clean. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), dirty makeup brushes can not only irritate your skin but also cause infections.
What you can do is spot clean your stippling brushes with a hand towel and a brush cleanser after each and every use. Then, once a week give them a deeper clean.
