When I discovered waterproof mascara I rejoiced at not needing to fear having streaked mascara down my face on rainy or sweaty days. However, I soon discovered that I had a new challenge, removing my waterproof mascara at the end of the day.
Removing waterproof mascara and waterproof eye makeup involves cotton swabs soaked in micellar water or eye makeup remover. Hold the saturated cotton swab over an eye for a few seconds to soak it into the makeup, then gently wipe away the makeup. Makeup cleaning wipes can be used as an alternative.
Let’s learn the precise way to easily clean your waterproof mascara at the end of the day.
How To Remove Waterproof Mascara
You have options when it comes to removing waterproof mascara and makeup. You will notice that none of the options I mention involve harsh rubbing. If at all possible you want to avoid harsh rubbing, especially on the very delicate skin around your eyes.
Micellar Water Is My Default Option For Removing Makeup
Micellar water is the best gentle cleansing option that you can use on your face. It can also be used to remove mascara, even waterproof mascara.
What makes micellar cleansing water so special is that it is powered by tiny micelles, or oil molecules, that act as a magnet to help lift dirt, oil, and makeup up and away from the skin.
Micellar water removes mascara, including those with waterproof formulas, cleans dirt and impurities, and intensely purifies It does so gently with no rinsing or rubbing required.
Micellar water is an all-purpose facial cleanser so besides removing waterproof mascara, it can also be used on your face and lips. It is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.
To use micellar water, all you need to do is saturate a cotton pad with the micellar water, then hold the pad over closed eyes for a couple of seconds and then gently wipe to remove eye makeup.
Removing waterproof lip or face makeup is just as easy. Wipe the saturated cotton pad over your face until your skin is completely clean. There is no need to follow up with any rinsing as your skin will be fully cleansed.
Makeup Removing Towelettes Give You A Portable Plan B
I completely understand that after a long, exhausting day the last thing you want to do is stand in front of your bathroom mirror trying to get every last bit of waterproof mascara off your lashes. Luckily you have an alternative. Stash a pack of makeup removing towelettes on your nightstand. They will be easily accessible and you can remove your mascara in bed.
Makeup removing towelettes are ultra-soft, alcohol-free, and can gently cleanse and remove all traces of makeup, even waterproof mascara, and long-wear makeup.
I have a pack of the L’Oréal Paris Ideal Clean Makeup Removing Towelettes, All Skin Types in my hand luggage whenever I travel.
To use a towelette on your waterproof mascara just take a towelette out of the packet and wipe away. Remember to close the pack afterward, so the other wipes don’t dry out.
If you are using your towelettes in bed before sleep, make sure that you have a nighttime moisturizer close to your bed too so you can moisturize after removing your makeup.
You Can Also Use Traditional Eye Makeup Remover
Maybe you are a fan of all things classically traditional. In that case, you can also use traditional eye makeup remover. I have 2 friends that are makeup artists and they both use traditional eye makeup remover so it is still an option even though micellar water always works just as well for me.
Traditional eye makeup remover has a double-action formula that gently and easily removes waterproof mascara and long-wearing eye makeup without leaving behind any greasy residue.
How to use traditional eye makeup remover: Saturate a cotton pad with the makeup remover, then close your eyes and gently sweep the cotton pad across your lids. Make sure that you do this gently and your long-wear eye makeup should be gone.
