I am sure that you can relate to the feelings of frustration when your eyeliner doesn’t go the distance. We spend what seems forever to get our cat-eye wings just right and by midday, it looks a mess and we need to start again.

- Dust Translucent Powder Along Your Lash Line
- Trace Your Lash Line With Concealer
- Seal Your Makeup With Setting Spray
- Blot Your Makeup During The Day
Instead of suffering eye makeup that is less than perfect, there are a couple of tweaks you can make to your eyeliner routine that will help your eyeliner stay on for the long haul. If you are intrigued, I’ve got seven tips here for you to help create a truly long-lasting eyeliner look.
Always Apply Eye Makeup Primer
Before you even think of applying any eye makeup, including eyeliner, you need to start with a makeup primer. Eye makeup primer creates a smooth base for your eye makeup and helps ensure that your eye makeup wears evenly. If you suddenly find that you are out of eye makeup primer, you can dab some foundation or concealer onto your lids and work from there.
Use A Waterproof Eyeliner
One of the easiest ways to ensure that your eyeliner stays in place all day is to use quality waterproof eyeliner. Don’t for a moment think that your waterproof eyeliner is reserved only for rainy days.
Layer Your Eyeliner Lines – Liquid Over Pencil
Even if you are an absolute expert with liquid eyeliner, smudges can still happen. The solution is to start out by lining your eyes with pencil eyeliner and layer your liquid eyeliner on top. That way your pencil eyeliner acts as an extra primer/base coat for your liquid eyeliner, giving a longer-lasting finish.
Dust Translucent Powder Along Your Lash Line
Here is a viable alternative if you aren’t able to use an eye makeup primer. Before starting your eyeliner process, take a small angled brush and add a small amount of powder to your lash line. This will blot away any excess oils that you may have on your lids which is a common cause of your eyeliner smudging or running. Follow up immediately with your eyeliner and you’re set for the day.
Trace Your Lash Line With Concealer
One of the great things about concealer is that it is a real multi-use product. It can be used for far more than just covering blemishes and pimples.
Similar to what you can do with translucent powder, use a small angled brush and trace concealer along your lash line to help protect your eyeliner from smudging throughout the day.
However, there are two important points to remember.
The first is that you will need a long-wearing concealer formula to make this work.
The second is something that I mentioned on this blog before. Some concealers can glow white under the black light that they use at nightclubs. So, if you are heading out to a nightclub make sure that your concealer is well covered by eyeliner or rather use the translucent powder method for clubbing.
Seal Your Makeup With Setting Spray
Once you have finished applying your eyeliner and the rest of your makeup, grab your setting spray and spritz with X and T motions over your face.
Makeup setting spray locks your makeup in place and prevents smudging and transferring of your makeup – within limits. For instance, makeup setting spray won’t stop your makeup from rubbing off onto sheets and pillowcases in bed, so always clean off your makeup before sleep.
I wrote a detailed article about makeup setting spray and you can find that here.
Blot Your Makeup During The Day
Oil and makeup do not mix well at all. The way to prevent smudging, smearing, and streaking if you are prone to having an oily complexion is to always carry a few blotting papers in your bag or purse.
Try blotting just under your eyes as the day goes on and you will likely notice that your eyeliner is no longer smeared and streaked down your face.
