Crying is something that happens to all of us at some stage. However there is no need to be stuck with ruined makeup and puffy eyes for hours afterward. With a few careful makeup tricks you can be looking and feeling pretty again in hardly any time at all.
The reason for your tears can vary. Maybe it is a sad scene in a movie or a sad song that triggers you. Hopefully it is not a painful breakup but we cannot ignore those because they do happen.
A girl I knew in college used to break up with her guy at the start of every summer vacation. That way, if she had a holiday romance it wouldn’t be cheating. Then, when school restarted she’d hook up with her boyfriend again. That worked for two summers. At the end of the third summer, her guy chose not to get back together because she did not value the relationship as much as he did.
Another cause of tears that very few girls think about is HRT. I’m not saying that taking your HRT makes you cry. What does happen is that your hormone levels will fluctuate through a monthly cycle. As a result there will be days during the month when you will just be more emotional and just about anything can make you cry.
Luckily, it will just require the help of only a few makeup tricks to disguise any evidence of the tears you have shed. Keep reading to find out how to look good after crying.
Prepare Properly
More often than not you have a fairly good idea when you likely to be feeling more emotional.
If you are going to be watching a chick flick with your bestie or your crush you know that tears are highly likely. The same goes for those mornings during your HRT cycle when you wake up with an emotional vulnerability.
On these days you can prepare yourself for any tears by using waterproof, long-wearing products to create your makeup look. This is especially true when it comes to your eye makeup.
Don’t Skip Primer
Primer is an essential part of any long-lasting makeup look, so take the precaution of making it a part of your daily routine.
Set Your Makeup
This is another step that you simply cannot afford to skip. Set all of your liquid makeup products with their powder counterpart. So, set your liquid foundation with a face powder. Set an eyeliner by applying a powder eye shadow of the same shade over top.
You can also lock in your makeup in place with a setting spray to keep it looking as if it were just freshly applied.
Bring Your Makeup Back Up
While priming and setting your makeup will help keep your makeup look in place even after a few tears.
However, there’s always the chance that a few tears will become many, many tears once you start. Even with your best preparation, too many tears can lead to the horror story of smudged mascara and blotchy foundation.
Be prepared for anything by having back up products with you at all times.
Here are some must-haves to include in your makeup bag.
- A no-rinse cleanser to wipe away any makeup that’s gone astray. I use micellar cleansing water with a few cotton swabs (L’Oréal has a great cleanser for waterproof makeup)
- A full-coverage, waterproof concealer
- A voluminous mascara to refresh your lashes.
- While you’re at it, pop a bright, confidence-boosting red lipstick in your bag as well so you can give yourself the instant pick-me-up you deserve. I always use matte shades but if gloss is your thing then go for it.
Blot, Never Ever Wipe Your Tears
If you do shed a few tears, try not to ever wipe your tears away. All this will do is emphasize that dreaded smudged mascara look. It will also make it more difficult to recover from your crying session.
Instead, blot away your tears with some soft tissues as gently as possible. If it is chick flick night you should probably have them present for the occasion, so put them to use.
I always have a pack in my purse as well.
Trapped Emotions
One final point that I would like to make is the important issue of trapped emotions and the effect they can have on your life and your transition.
I wrote a detailed article on how to deal with and release trapped emotions here on Pink Femme. You can find it here. Take a moment to give it a read.
