We all know that a full face of makeup is beautiful. However, in some circumstances, less is more. Maybe the summer heat is really intense and your makeup might melt right off or you are running errands and want to look more fresh-faced. Either way, there are times when light makeup will better fit.
The 9 Steps to do light makeup:
- Be sure to moisturize
- You need to apply primer
- Use a lightweight foundation
- Be sure to color your cheeks
- Keep eyeshadow simple to maintain your minimalist look
- Use pencil eyeliner for near-invisible tightlining
- Always apply mascara
- Color your lips in a subtle shade
- Remember to set your light makeup look
Whatever the reason that you want to try doing light makeup, you just need the correct products and techniques and the process will be easy. Let’s go through the step-by-step light makeup tutorial in detail.
Be Sure To Moisturize
You need to start with your skincare if you want to pull off light makeup look as there will be nowhere for your skin to hide.
Choose a moisturizer that has SPF so that you can hydrate your skin while at the same time protecting it from harmful UV rays.
I use the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Triple Power Day Lotion SPF 30. I find that it layers well under my makeup.
You Need To Apply Primer
It might seem counter-intuitive but you can’t skip primer just because you are doing a light makeup look. If anything using a primer is even more important to help hold your lighter makeup products in place.
If you choose a primer that has a hydrating formula it will feel lighter on your skin.
Use A Lightweight Foundation
Your goal is to keep things light. Therefore, you will want a foundation that has a lightweight formula.
You can use either a liquid or powder formula. Whichever you choose, thanks to your primer, you’ll get all-day, comfortable coverage.
Another option if your goal is to create a more natural finish is to use a tinted moisturizer. That way your moisturizer, primer, and foundation steps are combined together into a single step.
Be Sure To Color Your Cheeks
Because you are going for a light makeup look, set aside your highlighter and bronzer. These makeup products tend to give you a more full-makeup look which is not what we are going for here.
Even so, you’ll still want a bit of color added to your face. The way you do this is by sweeping blush onto your cheeks.
Because this is your last layer of face makeup, you can also apply your blush along the hollows of your cheeks to define your cheekbones as you would do with bronzer.
Keep Eyeshadow Simple To Maintain Your Minimalist Look
You can easily get away with not wearing any eyeshadow when doing light makeup. However, a little bit of color on your lids can make a big difference.
Dust a thin layer of a monochrome eyeshadow in your color of choice onto your lids. I would keep the shade of color subtle. Make sure to blend the eyeshadow into your crease.
Use Pencil Eyeliner For Near Invisible Tightlining
Eyeliner is not compulsory for when you do light makeup, the same as with eyeshadow.
However, if you decide to use a bit of liner, opt for a pencil formula. Liquid and gel formulas are too bold for the look you are going for.
Use your pencil eyeliner in brown to tightline your upper lash line for a near-invisible eyeliner effect.
The good news is that I have a whole article on the crucial skill of tightlining, that you can find here.
Always Apply Mascara
Unlike eyeliner and eyeshadow, you can’t skip mascara.
Apply a light washable formula so that it won’t feel heavy on your lashes. I find that using a black/brown shade is more suited to my light makeup look than using the normal black.
A useful hack when using a lighter formula mascara is to curl your lashes first, before applying your mascara. Learn all about using an eyelash curler from this article here on Pink Femme.
Color Your Lips In A Subtle Shade
When you choose your lip color, keep it sheer and subtle. If you go for something like a hydrating lip gloss, you will give your pout a light dose of shiny color.
Remember To Set Your Light Makeup Look
My final piece of makeup advice here applies whether you are doing light makeup or not. Whatever your makeup look, you’d like your makeup to last all through the day without the need to constantly check your look to see if you need a touch-up.
That’s why you need a setting spray. When you have light makeup you can give it a boost by using a setting spray with a radiant finish.
Why not expand your knowledge even further by reading another makeup/beauty article here on Pink Femme. You can find them either via the menu at the top of the page or by clicking this link that will take you to the list of all the beauty articles.
When it comes to my choices for makeup and beauty products, I only use L’Oréal Paris (Available on Amazon). I have really sensitive skin and never once have I had any negative reaction to any L’Oréal product.
