If you are anything like me, then during the often scorching hot months of the summer season, you may have crafted a precise skin care routine with the most ideal products that complement warm summer temps. However, it’s vital to revisit that routine as you prepare for the drying fall weather. The good news is that you won’t have to throw out your current skin care products.

These are the 10 essential tips to adapt your skincare routine from summer to fall:

  • Switch Out Your Facial Cleanser
  • Change Up Your Moisturizer
  • Get a Face Serum That Goes From Day To Night
  • Stay On Top Of Sun Protection
  • Add an Overnight Face Mask To Your Routine
  • Give Yourself an At-Home Facial
  • Try Self-Tanner For a Summer-Skin Glow
  • Protect Your Lips
  • Plug In Your Humidifier
  • Modify Your Shower Temperature

Let’s take a closer look at how to refresh your routine for fall, as well as the chillier months ahead with nourishing skin care products.

10 Tips to Prepare Skin for Fall

These are my 10 tips for updating your skin care routine at the end of summer.

Switch Out Your Facial Cleanser

Cleansing your complexion should be something you do every day, irrespective of the season. Revive your skin during the fall time from summer’s extra humid and sweat-inducing weather that probably left clogged pores in its wake.

Try a clay cleanser like the L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Detox & Brighten Cleanser (available on Amazon) which is made to rid skin of impurities like dirt, oil and sweat for revitalized skin and a fresh glow. The formula seamlessly transforms from a clay to a mousse texture for a gentle cleanse without stripping the skin.

Change Up Your Moisturizer

You may find that a lightweight facial moisturizer was all you needed during the summer months but your skin will be thirsty for more hydration once the air gets colder and drier. Consider stashing away your summertime moisturizer and trying a different one for your fall skin care routine.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), the best time to apply a hydrating cream or balm is immediately after washing your face as this is when your skin can better lock in the most moisture.

I use the L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Collagen Expert Day Moisturizer with SPF 30 (available on Amazon) to intensely hydrate my skin with a boost of collagen. It also contains peptides and niacinamide to help lock in moisture and works to improve skin elasticity and brighten skin. For those who spent way too much time in the summer unprotected, combat premature signs of aging with the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Pressed Night Moisturizer with Retinol + Niacinamide (available on Amazon). This nighttime face cream is formulated with retinol and niacinamide to help reduce wrinkles and deeply moisturize for a more even skin tone and texture.

Get a Face Serum That Goes From Day To Night

During the summer you may have cut back on skin care for a basic routine to help mitigate excess oil — especially during hot sweaty days. However, as the temperature dips, you’ll want to increase your skin care layers by adding a face serum to target dryness, an uneven complexion, dark spots and other skin concerns that leave your skin looking dull. The beauty of serums is their concentrated formulation that targets these issues with potent active ingredients — aka retinol, salicylic acid, glycolic acid and vitamin C. This makes it easy for all skin types and skin concerns to find something that’ll make their skin happy.

If you’re dealing with dry, flaky skin use a hyaluronic acid serum to add a concentrated layer of moisturization to skin. Try the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives 1.5% Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum (available on Amazon) which quickly replenishes hydration, visibly reduces wrinkles and plumps skin for a healthy-looking glow. Personally, I use the L’Oréal Paris Bright Reveal 12% [Niacinamide + Amino Sulfonic + Ferulic Acid] Dark Spot Serum (available on Amazon) to my fall skin care routine to reduce the appearance of dark spots like sun spots from an extra long lounge in the sun. It’s also great for post-acne marks from a pimple that you kept picking.

Stay On Top Of Sun Protection

Sun protection shouldn’t just be something you think about when you’re headed to the beach. Your sun care routine should be year-round, rain or shine. Mine is. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), you should apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater daily as directed. You should also take precautions around water, sand and snow. I’m including snow here, thinking ahead to winter skin care, as the sun’s rays can be reflected off of these surfaces and increase your chance of sunburn.

No matter the time of year, no one wants sunscreen that leaves an oily sheen on the face. To combat this, pick a lightweight formulation that absorbs quickly into the skin. Opt for the L’Oréal Paris Bright Reveal Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Daily UV Lotion (available on Amazon) which blends into all skin types for an invisible finish, while protecting skin from the sun’s dangerous UV rays.

Add an Overnight Face Mask To Your Routine

Another way to help hydrate and pamper your skin during your nighttime beauty routine this fall is by reaching for an overnight face mask. Overnight face masks are different from traditional face masks in that you leave them on your skin instead of rinsing them off. The L’Oréal Paris RevitaLift Triple Power Anti-Aging Overnight Mask (available on Amazon) is a luxurious, creamy and hydrating leave-on face mask formulated with Pro-Retinol, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid.

Give Yourself an At-Home Facial

Your skin deserves some added TLC, especially as we both know how busy the fall and winter can be. However, a spa trip isn’t always possible. If you’re looking to save money opt to give your skin a treat at home. Pick a time when you can wind down and focus your energy on one thing, then break out a face mask. Live the full spa life at home by slathering an even layer of L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Detox & Brighten Face Mask (available on Amazon) on your face. This mask is enhanced with charcoal to help draw out impurities and dirt to detoxify skin.

Try Self-Tanner For a Summer-Skin Glow

When the summer is over you don’t have to say goodbye to your sun-kissed glow. Instead of using a dangerous tanning booth, utilize a self-tanner to rock a bronzed look once summer ends. A gradual self-tanner, like the L’Oréal Paris Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Facial Drops, Fragrance-Free (available on Amazon) is perfect for keeping a summer-skin glow regardless of the time of year.

The clear and lightweight bronzer is suitable for all skin types and buildable so you can customize your glow. One “tanning session” involves adding five to seven drops to your moisturizer of choice for a subtle glow that gives your face the “I just got back from vacation in Ibiza” look.

Protect Your Lips

One of the main shared experiences that many people have is the annoyance of chapped lips. No one wants dry, flaky and peeling lips from cold weather and constant lip licking. According to the AAD, you should use a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher to protect dry lips from the sun which can irritate the sensitive skin even more. In addition to applying lip balm, staying hydrated and using a humidifier are other ways to protect your lips from damage — especially during the cooler temperatures of fall that dry out the skin.

Exchange your matte lipsticks for a hydrating lip balm like the L’Oréal Paris Glow Paradise Balm-in-Lipstick with Pomegranate Extract (available on Amazon) which provides lips with instant hydration in 10 buildable colors.

Plug In Your Humidifier

While there’s much fun to be had during the fall, you may notice the air getting drier — and you’ll probably be spending plenty of time indoors with the heat on. When you do, consider investing in a humidifier to add much-needed moisture to the air. Set one up in your bedroom or even a portable option for your desk at work. Your skin will thank you.

Modify Your Shower Temperature

When the weather was hot and humid, a cold shower may have been your saving grace. As it becomes cooler outside, it can be tempting to start indulging in super-hot showers. There’s just one issue — per the AAD bathing in hot water can strip your skin of the essential oils it needs, which can leave you feeling drier. Adjust your shower temperature to be lukewarm for your skin’s sake. If it’s just too cool for you, try limiting the amount of time you’re under the stream of hot water to only a few minutes.
