Correct Royal Etiquette For Stairs

There are extremely strict rules on how all royal women are permitted to go down a staircase. Every lady that joins the royal family must also perfect the way they walk down a flight of stairs and are taught to descend a staircase gracefully.

The Parallel Chin As The Cornerstone To Staircase Etiquette

Always have your chin parallel to the ground. This helps maintain posture when sitting, standing, walking, and descending stairs.

Often walking downstairs is the grand entrance that you, a royal lady, make to a room or event. It is when all eyes will be on you and photos will be taken.

When your chin points down (or up) it gives the impression that you are not paying attention to, or interested in what is happening at the event you are attending.

A Royal Lady Descends A Step Or Two Behind Her Protector

It is normal to see male royals walking a step or two in front of the female royal and to the side away from the balustrade.

This is so that he can lend support if she trips – especially in heels. If a princess is traveling on her own, this position will be taken up by a senior member of the security detail.

Protecting The Up-Skirt

When a staircase is tall, steep, and straight the male companion/security will take up a position immediately ahead of the princess for the top part of the staircase where there is a risk of an up-skirt view, or worse, a photo.

Once the up-skirt risk has passed he will move to the side so that the grand entrance can be made.

On a curved staircase, a princess will always point her toes slightly toward the banister. That slightly sideways stance will make it impossible for those waiting at the bottom of the stairs to see up her skirt or dress.

Gliding Effortlessly Down

A princess goes down a flight of stairs slowly enough that she can descend the entire staircase in one fluid movement with no change of speed or jerky movements.

The only times she should look down to her feet are for the top two steps and maybe the bottom two as well. With practice, you will not need to look down at the bottom two steps.

A light Hand On The Banister Controls The Glory Glide

You want to rest your hand on the banister, slightly behind you. The best spot for your hand will be level with the stair that your back foot is on.

This way if you slip or trip your hand is already positioned to prevent you from falling. This is something that can easily happen as you learn to glide down the stairs.

Another advantage of this hand position is that you will feel the end of the banister as soon as you step down off the bottom step. With practice, it will make it possible to step off the bottom step without looking down.

Royal Etiquette For Ascending Stairs

When a princess goes up a flight of stairs, her male companion or security will take up a position immediately behind her to prevent anyone at the bottom of the stairs from seeing up her dress or skirt. For this reason, her security will also carry a large umbrella so as to shield the princess’ skirt on a glass-walled staircase or escalator of the type commonly found at airports.
