Can You Wear Makeup To The Gym

I know the feeling, when work gets busy it seems near impossible to get a workout in. This is especially true in the winter when it gets dark and cold so early. So I go to the gym straight from work, still with my makeup on. I often find that if I don’t go to the gym straight from work then it is hard to motivate myself to head out into the cold again once I’m home feeling warm and comfortable.

Going to the gym from work raises an interesting question. Because I always wear makeup to work, can I wear makeup to the gym as well?

While it is possible to wear makeup to the gym, there are five makeup products that I’ve tested to be fully gym-proof. They are:

  • BB Cream Is A Gym-Proof Makeup Product
  • Waterproof Concealer Is Gym-Proof For Hiding Blemishes
  • Waterproof Mascara Should Outlast Most Workouts
  • Lip Balm Can Outlast Any Workout
  • At The Gym Eyebrow Gel Will Fill In And Hold Your Brows

Let’s take a closer look at how you can rock some makeup at the gym without the risk of getting a breakout of pimples on your face.

Can You Wear Makeup To The Gym?

We all want to look stunning at all times and rock our latest killer makeup look. However, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests taking your makeup off prior to hitting the gym especially if you are putting in a really hard workout and will be sweating. Many makeup products can clog the pores through which sweat needs to come and in these cases, your workout routine can cause or worsen acne.

If you are like me and feel naked going out in public with a completely bare face, no need to stress. Not all of us are comfortable going completely makeup-free, and that’s totally OK.

Instead of dealing with any anxiety that comes from ditching your makeup routine completely, you can instead simplify your look with a few gym-proof essentials.

Irrespective of whether you wear makeup to the gym or not, always pack in your facial cleansing and skincare products. It is always important to wash/cleanse your face after exercising and especially so if you are wearing makeup while training. Once your workout is done start your skincare routine as soon as you hit the locker room.

Every gym I’ve been to has decent mirrors and lighting so I’ve never had a problem with doing a fresh face of makeup after my shower and skincare routine.

5 Gym-Proof Makeup Products That You Need

If you’re not heading to the gym from work or somewhere similar and want to plan a gym-specific makeup look then these 5 products are bomb-proof enough for your toughest workout routine.

BB Cream Is A Gym-Proof Makeup Product

If you want to even out your complexion and cover up any imperfections, then reach for your BB cream. I use L’Oréal Paris Magic BB Anti-Redness (available on Amazon) as my gym-perfect BB cream. It has pigments that counteract redness.

I’ve been able to do a spin bike/treadmill brick session without looking flushed even though my legs are completely dead. In case you were wondering, my brick session in the gym involves 10min on the spin bike, straight onto 5min on the treadmill, both at maximum effort. The bike/run set is repeated 6 times with no rest breaks between sets for a solid 90-minute cardio session.

My face doesn’t even go red when I’m squatting my personal max-limit weight.

Waterproof Concealer Is Gym-Proof For Hiding Blemishes

If you have any blemishes or acne scars you want to hide while you are at the gym then a waterproof concealer is a must.

I use the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Full Wear Concealer Waterproof, (available on Amazon) mainly for the matte finish that minimizes any unwanted shine beyond the beads of sweat on my brow.

Waterproof Mascara Should Outlast Most Workouts

We both know how long, voluminous lashes can transform our faces from plain to glam. I completely understand why you would want to include mascara for your gym routine. However, for the gym, be sure to choose a waterproof mascara or risk your mascara running mid-routine. When I know I’m hitting the gym for a weights session (as opposed to intense cardio) after work I’ve used the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Waterproof Mascara (available on Amazon) and never had any mishaps.

Lip Balm Can Outlast Any Workout

Using lip balm is an absolute must for when you go to the gym even if you don’t wear makeup to the gym.

A smooth and nourishing lip conditioner will protect your lips and a tinted lip balm will make your lips really pop with color too.

My red L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Lipstick Glossy Balm  (available on Amazon) was able to outlast a 1.2-mile ocean swim in an Ironman 70.3 triathlon. I applied a fresh coat between the bike and run legs and could rock my red lips at the finish line after the half-marathon.

At The Gym Eyebrow Gel Will Fill In And Hold Your Brows

If you feel vulnerable if your brows aren’t done, as I do, there is a solution. You can have on-point brows that outlast almost any workout. I use the L’Oréal Paris Unbelieva-Brow Longwear Waterproof Brow Gel (available on Amazon) at the gym. Making sure that it is the waterproof formula gives me the confidence that it won’t smudge or transfer.

However, I do skip on brow gel when I do swim workouts as my swim goggles cover my lash line and my lashes aren’t visible anyway. In fact, during swim workouts, I only ever use lip balm out of these five options.

When it comes to my choices for makeup and beauty products, I only use  L’Oréal Paris (Available on Amazon). I have really sensitive skin and never once have I had any negative reaction to any L’Oréal product.
