This is the blog post that Candace wrote on Christmas eve. However, I believe that her message is just as relevant on every other day of the year. While Christmas is the season of gift-giving in an outward sense, every day of the year is a chance to give yourself something that will validate who you are on the inside. It can be as simple as sitting up straight with good femme posture as you read this blog post – or going all out with getting your makeup done at Sephora or doing a full makeover at a studio. If you have never done anything femme for yourself but always wanted to, today is an excellent day to start – or at least write down the date of what will be your “Day One” as well as what you plan to do. Years ago I read a quote that went something like this: “You don’t need New Year to change your life. All you need is a Monday.” You are all beautiful, inside and out. It’s a time to consider others more than yourself. It’s a time when you give yourself. We mistake the act of exchanging gifts as the celebration of giving. That’s not right. The exchange is an outward expression of what is really going on behind the scenes, in the heart, in the spirit, in the soul, and in the love of the giver. This is a season in the midst of long, dark days when humans express themselves as light in a world filled with hate, injustice, and selfishness. The true gift is you. It’s me. It’s all of us. You are a gift to the world. The fact that you’re a boy and that you wear panties and bras, dresses, skirts, or whatever your heart desires, does not change the fact that you are a special gift for the sake of others. The fact that society has certain expectations for maleness to which you don’t inherently fit does not change the fact that you are a beautiful present to the same society. It’s simply that you are human. I hope that you see that about yourself. You are of value. You have worth. Now, what about your girliness? It’s all a part of the complete package. It’s not the pretty pink wrapping or the silk bow. Those get torn, discarded, and tossed into the recycling bin. We talk about the girl within, and though I too like the metaphor, using it often myself, it’s not entirely accurate. There’s no little precious girly figure straining to be set free from a deep prison within you. You are her. She is you. You have deep seeded passions for femininity, but that is who you are. You may compartmentalize your girliness, but it’s woven into you, making you a whole person, not two people, not one person with some extra personalities. The whole of you is what makes you special, what makes you the gift. So, my dear girly friends, i simply want to tell you to be you. I like you as you and YOU are special–not just to me, but to everyone. When you give your co-workers that “Jelly of the Month” membership, know that they are receiving you, even your girly nature. When you give your wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, etc. that new toaster, guard your groin, but remember that they are receiving your femininity because they are receiving an expression of you. Isn’t that something to lift your spirit? Knowing that every gift you hand to someone is a way of extending your femininity? I don’t know, it might be a stretch of the imagination. For me, it helps, though. Tomorrow is Christmas Eve and the next day will be Christmas. Gifts will be exchanged. I really hope you get some pretty things to add to your increasingly girly wardrobe. But more than anything, as those gifts are handed around, I hope it reminds you that YOU are the gift that people need. All of you. Not some manly exterior with a hidden, secret, effeminate creature to be held back. You are the remarkable, incredible, fantastic, worthy, priceless, invaluable gift, with all of the girliness within you.
