8 Types Of Nail Polish You Should Know

Okay, real talk — the first time I tried giving myself a gel manicure at home, I totally messed it up. I didn’t cure it long enough, it was bumpy, and it peeled off the next day like a sticker (ugh). But that little disaster sent me down a beauty rabbit hole, and I ended up learning so much about all the different types of nail polish out there. Whether you’re just starting your nail journey or you’ve been experimenting for years — whatever your gender identity or style — it can be super empowering (and fun!) to know your options.

There are 8 common types: traditional, gel, acrylic, breathable, polygel, dip powder, builder gel (BIAB), and hard gel. Each offers different finishes, application methods, and wear time for every kind of nail lover!

Nail polish isn’t just about color — it’s about expression. Whether you’re feeling bold, femme, chill, or want to switch things up for gender euphoria, the right polish type can totally change the vibe. And let’s be real: trying something new (like dip powder or BIAB) can be way less intimidating when you actually understand what it is and how it works. Ready to find your nail soulmate?

Traditional Nail Polish

Ah, the OG of nail color! Traditional nail polish is the first type most of us ever used. It’s the kind that dries in the air and doesn’t need any fancy equipment like UV or LED lights. It comes in all the finishes you can dream of — glossy, matte, glittery, even metallic.

If you’re like me and get bored of the same shade after a few days, this one’s perfect. It usually lasts around a week (less if you’re typing a lot or washing dishes without gloves — guilty). I love it for its simplicity and the fact that it’s easy to switch up.

Gel Nail Polish

Gel polish has been everywhere for good reason — it’s glossy, durable, and great for both short nails and extensions. You apply it just like regular polish, but it gets cured under an LED light (usually for 30–60 seconds). And once it’s set, it’s not going anywhere for at least two weeks.

Gel’s available in matte, shimmer, glitter, cat-eye, and everything in between. Whether you’re doing it yourself or heading to the salon, this one’s a staple.

Acrylic

Acrylic isn’t polish in a bottle — it’s a mix of liquid monomer and powder polymer that forms a strong layer on your nails. It’s especially great if you want longer nails that won’t break easily. Once it hardens, your nail tech (or you!) files and shapes them before painting.

They usually last 2–3 weeks and can be filled once or twice before you need a fresh set. Acrylics can be dramatic or natural — totally up to you!

Breathable Nail Polish

If your nails feel dry or damaged after gels or acrylics, breathable polish is a game-changer. It allows air and water to pass through to your natural nails — keeping them more hydrated and less prone to chipping.

This type is especially great for folks who want to let their nails breathe without sacrificing color. Expect 7–10 days of wear, and it’s perfect if you’re in nail recovery mode or just want something gentler.

Polygel

Think of polygel as the lovechild of gel and acrylic. It comes in a tube, has a putty-like texture, and is applied with a brush. You can build length, add strength, and shape your nails just how you like them.

It’s lightweight but crazy durable. Plus, it’s less harsh than acrylic and has no strong smell. You’ll need an LED light to cure it, but once it sets, it stays gorgeous for up to three weeks.

Dip Powder

Dip powder is my go-to when I need something that lasts forever. Well, like three to four weeks — but still, impressive! It’s a powder system that you layer over a base coat. Each nail is dipped into powder (or powder is poured over the nail) and sealed with a clear coat.

No LED light needed, and it dries super fast. It’s low-maintenance and chip-resistant — perfect for busy babes.

Builder Gel (BIAB)

Builder gel, also called BIAB (Builder in a Bottle), is a thicker gel that strengthens your natural nails or helps you build length. It’s like regular gel polish but with more structure and staying power.

You’ll need an LED lamp to cure it, and it’s totally soak-off friendly with acetone. BIAB is amazing for nail growth and especially good if your nails are thin or brittle.

Hard Gel Nail Polish

Hard gel is like the bodybuilder cousin of regular gel polish. It’s strong, sculptable, and great for extending nail shape using forms. Unlike builder gel, though, you can’t soak it off — it has to be filed off carefully.

The bonus? It’s super resilient against chemicals and wear, so it’s ideal for folks who use their hands a lot but still want pretty nails.

Final Thoughts

Nails are such a fun, expressive part of who we are — and honestly, there’s no right way to do them. Whether you’re drawn to the glossy finish of gel, the strength of acrylics, or the breathability of lighter polishes, the beauty of it all is that you get to explore and play until you find what feels like you.

Don’t be afraid to switch things up, mix styles, or even totally flop a DIY mani (we’ve all been there). Every chip, smudge, or experiment is part of learning what makes you feel confident and happy. Whether you’re doing your own nails or getting them professionally done, the most important thing is that it brings you joy.

I’d love to hear what nail types you’ve tried and which ones are your faves. Have any tips, stories, or polish hacks? Drop them in the comments — let’s share and support each other on our nail journeys.
