I know the feeling all too well. Just about every hairstyle that I see in magazines shows ways that we can make medium and longer hair look feminine. As an athlete, longer hair is simply not practical. However, I still want to look as feminine as possible even though I have short hair. Yes, I let my hair grow out a bit when I’ve not got any big races in hot climates but at least once every season or two I get my hair cut short – really short.
I’m sure that many of you can relate to having short hair and trying to style it in a way that looks feminine. I mostly rely on accessories like my dangly earrings to frame my face in a feminine way. In a way, short hair is an advantage here as I can have my pretty earrings on full display.
Here are my 10 hacks for short hair. I have 4 hacks to care for short hair so that you can start growing it out without damage and a further 6 hacks for styling the short hair that you have in a feminine way.

4 Hair Care Tips For Short Hair
The first step to the best short hairstyle is proper hair care. Adding these tips to your regular hair care routine will help keep your short locks as healthy and strong as possible. This is also a benefit if you are starting to grow out your hair. You don’t want to lose precious inches of hair growth because you have damaged your hair.
Short Hair Care Tip 1: Use Less Hair Product
Your Short hair still needs the same leave-in hair care products (such as hair cream and hair serum), but you need to remember that your hair requires less product than longer locks.
I know this might seem obvious, but it’s worth repeating because it is a mistake that I’ve often made myself. Using too much product can weigh down your short hair and make it look flat and greasy – nobody wants that. Instead, start with a much smaller amount of product and work it only through your lengths and ends. You can always add a little extra product if you started with too little, but once you’ve put too much on your hair there’s no quick solution.
Short Hair Care Tip 2: Wash As Often As You Need To
Short hair can have a tendency to get oilier at a quicker rate since the ends of your hair are much closer to your oil-producing roots. Still, your hair will need moisture — especially if you’re increasing your washing efforts to combat greasy strands.
This is something that I was guilty of but for a different reason. During my triathlon training, I would wash my hair after every swim session because I hated the smell of pool chemicals in my hair. This meant that I was washing my hair 5 to 6 times a week – to the horror of my hairdresser.
To get fresh tresses without losing moisture, use a shampoo and conditioner system that’s formulated to replenish your locks, such as the L’Oréal Paris EverPure Moisture Shampoo and L’Oréal Paris EverPure Moisture Conditioner (both available on Amazon).
Short Hair Care Tip 3: Use A Deep Conditioning Treatment
Just because your strands are shorter doesn’t mean that they require less TLC. When your hair could use extra attention, do what I did and swap out your regular conditioner for the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Total Repair 5 Power Restore Multi-Use Treatment (available on Amazon). Use as a mask, co-wash, or leave-in conditioner treatment, renewing straight to curly hair.
Something to remember: It’s important to use coordinating hair care products to get the best results, so if you pick up the above treatment, be sure to stock your shower with the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Total Repair 5 Repairing Shampoo and L’Oréal Paris Elvive Total Repair 5 Repairing Conditioner (both available on Amazon).
Short Hair Care Tip 4: Get A Trim
While trips to the salon are necessary to keep your shortcut, there is a way that you can give your ends a trim and keep your hair healthy at home. Hair dusting is a method of trimming dead ends and the bits of hair that are split, overly dry, or otherwise damaged. This small trim can not only improve the overall appearance of your mane but can also make your short hair more manageable.
If your goal is to start growing your hair, be sure to follow the other tips I’ve just discussed so that you can reduce your hair damage as much as possible. If your hair is damaged, a slight trim will remove the split ends before they extend further up the hair strands.
6 Short Hair Styling Tips
Now that I’ve shared with you my best short hair care tips, it’s time for some styling suggestions. After all, it is possible to look feminine with short hair if you know how. Keep reading to learn about six short hair styling tips to help you make the most of your look.
Short Hair Styling Tip 1: Refresh And Add Volume With Dry Shampoo
On days when your roots are feeling extra oily, refresh them with a dry shampoo. I use the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Dream Lengths Air Volume Dry Shampoo (available on Amazon). Simply spritz it onto your roots, holding the can six to eight inches away from your hair, then brush through. The formula will instantly absorb excess oil and give your strands a boost.
Short Hair Styling Tip 2: Make Headbands Your Bff
There’s one thing that I don’t like about super-short hair having to give up on my ability to pull my hair into an easy ponytail.
This much-loved go-to just doesn’t work with most short hairstyles. So when you’re looking to get your hair off of your face, we simply need to find another solution 一 that’s where a headband comes in handy. Find a few stylish ones and you’ll be sure to have a new favorite accessory.
I have a whole collection and can find one to go with just about any outfit. I also have a few Alice bands in my collection.
Short Hair Styling Tip 3: Tousle For Texture
Truly, there’s no hair length that can’t stand for some added texture. But short hairstyles especially look their best when they’re tousled and texturized.
For a messy, piece-y effect, try a hair pomade, like the L’Oréal Paris Studio Line Overworked Hair Putty (available on Amazon). Just work a small amount through your strands (either damp or dry), then use your fingers to tousle your hair and style.
Short Hair Styling Tip 4: Air Dry Often
All hair types and lengths can benefit from air-drying more often since too much heat styling can contribute to damage. Using just a lightweight hairspray can help emphasize the natural shape of your strands and create a carefree, gorgeous look.
To rock this style for yourself, spritz the L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Light Hairspray (available on Amazon) onto damp hair, then scrunch your hair as much as desired and let it dry on its own.
Short Hair Styling Tip 5: Wear A Braided Style
If you thought braided hairstyles were only for medium or long hair, think again. It’s totally possible, and stylish, to pull off a braided look with short locks.
Obviously, ultra-short hair doesn’t lend itself to braiding, but most short hairstyles do.
Short Hair Styling Tip 6: Consider Updating Your Color
There’s no reason you have to stick with just one change at a time. If you want a whole new look, pair your short haircut with a new hair color. If you’re wondering whether you’d look beautiful with blonde hair or red hair, now’s your chance to find out.
You can update your hair hue at home with the help of an at-home hair color kit, like the L’Oréal Paris Féria, L’Oréal Paris Superior Preference, or L’Oréal Paris Excellence Crème (available on Amazon). And just in case that sounds like too much newness for you, you can always switch up your shade with a temporary hair color spray, like the L’Oréal Paris Hair Makeup Temporary 1-Day Hair Color Spray (available on Amazon), instead. The latter is perfect if you want to try something funky as a 1-off experiment.
